Belgian Police Officers Indicted in Fatal Chase of Young Motorcyclists

Nearly 5 years after the death of Ouassim and Sabrina, three police officers were finally indicted, on Wednesday, in Brussels, by the indictment chamber. The pleadings to discuss the referral to the criminal court will take place on February 23.
In this case, the council chamber considered that the chase that caused the death of the two young people was dangerous and disproportionate given the facts that were blamed on Sabrina and Ouassim, namely, the non-compliance with the Highway Code, reports BX1.
By engaging in a chase and blocking, "the three police officers in the car put the motorcyclists in danger, but also the other police officers and all road users. There is a fault on the part of the police officers," she added.
According to Me Joke Callewaert, lawyer for the family of one of the victims, it is a relief for the relatives of Sabrina and Ouassim, who have been trying for years to obtain justice.
"But nothing is yet won for us. We demand the truth and justice for Sabrina and Ouassim. And as long as the police officers responsible for their death have not been convicted, we will continue our fight," she added, specifying that the pleadings to decide on a referral of the three police officers to a criminal court will begin on February 23.
To recall, the facts date back to May 9, 2017. Sabrina and Ouassim are riding a motorcycle when a police car tries to stop them for non-compliance with the Highway Code. After a chase involving three police cars, a fourth blocks the exit of the Bailli tunnel on Avenue Louise. Ouassim, 24, dies on the spot, while Sabrina, 20, will later succumb to her injuries in the hospital.
