Belgian Police Officers Face Trial for Fatal Motorcycle Chase Deaths

After five years of relentless battle, the families of Sabrina and Ouassim, two young people killed during a police chase with three Belgian police officers, may be on the verge of obtaining justice. The three police officers involved in this tragedy are being prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter before the police court.

The facts date back to May 9, 2017. Sabrina and Ouassim, aged 20 and 24 respectively, were on a motorcycle when they were chased by a police patrol. Ouassim died on the spot while Sabrina died in the hospital, recalls bx1.

Since that day, the families have been demanding justice. The indictment chamber has finally decided to send the three police officers from the Brussels-Capital-Ixelles police zone to the police court. They are being prosecuted for "involuntary accident" resulting in the deaths of the two young people.

Me Joke Callewaert, one of the lawyers for the victims’ families, is pleased with this decision, the result of a long process. "Rendered more than five years after the facts, this decision is the outcome of a long struggle by the families to fight against the impunity of the police," she said on Wednesday evening.

In their quest for justice, the families have been able to count on human rights defense associations. "According to the League, the multiplication of this type of incident should push the police to reflect. When there is no danger to others, these chases must be prohibited or at least better regulated," the lawyer stressed.
