Belgian Police Officer Sentenced for Leaking Secrets to Terror Suspect’s Brother

A police officer from Schaerbeek, of Moroccan origin, was sentenced to 50 months in suspended prison for divulging professional secrets. He is also being prosecuted by the North Brussels police zone for concealment of facts.
The 53-year-old man maintained discreet relations with Yassine Attar, the brother of the mastermind of the Paris and Brussels attacks. More than 200 contacts were recorded by the police between September 2015 and March 2016, but according to the investigation, the data leak dated back to the summer of 2014.
According to information reported by the site 7sur7, Mohammed S., an inspector in the North Brussels police zone, took advantage of his free access to police databases to provide confidential information, including investigation reports for acts of terrorism.
The inspector’s tribulations did not end despite obtaining an 18-month suspended pre-trial detention. His testimony (or rather confession), broadcast by the daily La Dernière Heure, on the police blunder of a colleague would have prompted the police zone to join the civil party for intentional concealment of information.
"If we make a small mistake, we try to cover up, or to protect each other," he confided to the daily about a colleague who is the subject of legal proceedings for intentional assault and battery on an individual.
