Belgian Police Face Nazi Salute Scandal as New Investigation Opens in Molenbeek

While the controversy continues to swell around the Hitler salute in the Chovanec affair, the outbreak of a new case has led to the opening of an investigation for suspicion of Nazism within the Molenbeek police in Belgium.

At Charleroi airport, a policewoman was seen performing a Nazi salute during the filmed intervention of a passenger’s death. This scene has sparked heated controversy. On Monday, Commissioner General Marc De Mesmaekere convened an emergency meeting attended by the four largest police union organizations, reports La Dernière Heure. At the end of this meeting, it should be noted that this file is now accessible to the head of police and that the team to lead the internal disciplinary investigation has been formed.

Meanwhile, a new case has erupted: denunciation of a "Nazism" case within the West police zone covering the territories of Molenbeek, Jette, Koekelberg, Ganshoren and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe. It is a tattoo on the arm of a policeman, the sign of the Blood and Honour movement, a network for the promotion of neo-Nazi music, specifies the Belgian media. The mayor of Molenbeek, Catherine Moureaux, informed of the case, is playing the card of caution. "I asked that the situation be verified and I am waiting for answers. I have never seen this tattoo but I am waiting for answers," she says.

The authority returns to the Charleroi airport affair. "We are living in a time when tensions around issues of the far right are attracting more attention and it is a good thing to be able to be concerned about it but we must also know how to keep reason. It seems to me that the Charleroi affair is quite particular and therefore rather exceptional," declares the mayor.
