Belgian Midfielder Marouane Fellaini Announces International Retirement

After 89 appearances for the national team and a very good World Cup in Russia last year, the Belgian player of Moroccan origin Marouane Fellaini has just announced his international retirement.
In a message posted yesterday on his Twitter account, the player writes: "I have decided to retire from international football. I think it’s the right time for me to leave and allow the next generation to continue this successful period in the history of Belgian football."
After several years spent at Manchester United, he left this year the multiple English champion for the Chinese club of Shandong Luneng, to the general surprise, but with a salary between 10 and 15 million euros, which will ensure him a very comfortable retirement.
Marouane Fellaini had been contacted by Morocco when he was young but he chose to join the Belgian team from the age of 18 and then to continue definitively with the Red Devils. But he had still hesitated a lot before making his choice. In 2007, he confided his impressions to the newspaper La Libre Belgique: "I asked my father’s advice. He left me free to choose. Today, I have opted for Belgium because my call-up honored me at a good time. But I admit that my choice is not yet final. I’ll see with time."
