Belgian Liberal Party Opposes Lifting Veil Ban in Public Higher Education

The decision of Wallonie-Bruxelles Enseignement (WBE) regarding the authorization of religious symbols, including the wearing of the veil, in official higher education institutions from the next school year, is not to the liking of the Mouvement réformateur (MR).
"It recreates unnecessary tension when the freedom of establishments is working very well in practice," commented Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR, on Twitter.
In a statement to the newspaper La dernière Heure, Julien Nicaise, administrator of WBE, assured that the members of the institution’s board of directors made this decision unanimously. "I’m not going to be hypocritical, we all know it’s mainly the veil that’s concerned. We all have a personal opinion on the subject but in this specific case, the general interest has prevailed with the desire to include women who wear a veil," he said.
Isabelle Mazzarra, director general of the ULB, the constitutionalist Christian Berhendt and Vanessa Moray, attaché of the MR group in the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, represent the MR on this council.
