Belgian Lawmaker Urges Right to Renounce Dual Citizenship Amid Detention Concerns

Deputy Nahima Lanjri, from the Christen Democratisch en Vlaams (Christian Democrats and Flemish, CD&V) party, wished that Belgium would plead for its citizens, holding dual nationality, to be able to renounce one of them so as not to be bound by obligations in one of the two countries.
This deputy of Moroccan origin addressed a written question to the Belgian Parliament to this effect. In her request, she invited Belgium to contact countries such as Turkey, Morocco, Greece or Canada, in order to grant their dual nationals the right to freely choose their national status.
This written question follows the continued detention of 12 Belgian-Turkish nationals in Turkey since August 2018, according to the Dutch media. Among these detainees is Cetinkaya Guslum, a 27-year-old Belgian-Turkish student arrested after his visit to Turkey. He is accused of his compromising Facebook posts related to the Kurds.
Moreover, some countries like Greece and Turkey allow their citizens to renounce their nationality on condition that they perform their compulsory military service, even outside their country. It should be noted that this subject will be discussed very soon in the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament.
