Belgian Investor’s Death in Morocco Prompts Exhumation Amid Poisoning Suspicions

The body of a Belgian investor, who died in Essaouira under mysterious circumstances, has just been exhumed on the orders of the Attorney General at the Safi Court of Appeal. The public prosecutor’s office does not rule out the hypothesis of death by food poisoning.
The septuagenarian of Muslim faith, who is married to a Moroccan, had been living in Essaouira since the 1990s. The businessman had invested in several tourist projects, including a riad in the old medina and old bazaars.
The facts date back 3 weeks, reports the daily Assabah. Taken to the emergency room of the hospital for a serious health problem, the deceased had died the same day. The results of the autopsy, announced a few days after his burial, mentioned food poisoning.
The case takes a new turn, the same source points out, specifying that the victim’s relatives have requested the opening of an investigation. The Belgian embassy in Rabat has also stepped in, pending the report of the counter-expertise ordered by the Attorney General’s Office.
