Belgian Interior Minister Warns of Growing Far-Right Extremism and Violence Threats

Belgian Interior Minister Pieter De Crem is concerned about a "significant increase in individuals and small cells of the far-right movement who legitimize the use of violence." These extremists would even be ready to take more violent actions.
Even if, according to the details provided by the minister, it is difficult to give an exact number of members or sympathizers, 12 far-right groups were detected in 2019, while 9 had been identified in 2018 and 17 in 2017. In 2018, the country’s police services recorded 30,100 "threats" compared to 29,260 in 2017.
In 15,488 cases, these were oral threats, while written threats represent 5,871 cases. In several other cases, there were threats by gestures or symbols. There were also 327 examples of bomb threats and 400 bomb alerts. However, it is not possible to determine which far-right or far-left groups these threats come from, indicates 7sur7.be.
Regarding left-wing extremism, the minister believes that "the violent acts in this movement are the work of a very small number of anarchists who are currently awaiting a verdict and have, as a result, reduced their actions."
