Belgian Intelligence Intensifies Monitoring of Right-Wing Extremist Threats

In Belgium, many right-wing extremists are the subject of special attention. This is at least what Vincent Van Quickenborne, the Minister of Justice, has stated.
The intelligence and security services have to monitor more and more right-wing extremists considered dangerous, he said in the Dutch newspaper De Tijd. In total, 67 names, including 19 from the right-wing extremist milieu, are on the list of potentially violent extremists of the Coordination Body for Threat Analysis (OCAM). On another list concerning "hate propagandists", there are 81 names, 29 of which are linked to the same milieu.
The minister assures that they are all being monitored by the intelligence and security services. "The trend has existed for several years. The 2015-2016 period and the IS attacks as well as the migration crisis seem to be at the origin of it," he explained.
The circulation of firearms within these circles is a concern for the State Security. For the time being, OCAM has "no concrete indication of an imminent danger from the extreme right," added Mr. Quickenborne.
