Belgian Girl, 5, Stranded in Morocco Amid Coronavirus Travel Ban

Yasmine, 5 and a half years old, and her parents are among hundreds of Belgians who find themselves stranded in Morocco since the suspension of air flights due to the coronavirus. The little girl expresses her feelings.

In a video, Yasmine addresses her friends: "In fact, friends, we are stuck in Morocco. We shouldn’t have gone there. Because, you know, a little while ago, there was the disease and we didn’t know there was the disease. And so, we came." She and her parents were supposed to return to Belgium on March 21, but their flight was canceled due to the coronavirus.

The more time passes, the more impatient the little girl becomes. "I really want to come to Belgium. I’m bored being in Morocco. But Belgium is still good (EDITOR’S NOTE: she gives a thumbs up). Because the Kinders are waiting for me there," she says. Yasmine’s family is stuck in the city of Tangier. She has tried many times to return to her country via other flights. Without success.

"The tickets for April 21 were canceled three days before. We took those of April 4 as a replacement and on the evening of March 19, they were canceled again. Then we paid 800 euros so that my 16-month-old baby, Yasmine and I could come back on March 20," says her mother, Samira Ech Charqy.

"We had to go on our own means to Fez. The plane was supposed to wait for us there. Just after that, we received a message from Ryanair. We had to be in Fez at 5 a.m. on March 21," she continues. The family finally made it to Fez, but on arrival, the gendarmes told them that the airport was closed.
