Belgian Family Arrested in Major Cannabis Smuggling Ring from Morocco

About twenty people were arrested on Thursday, July 4, 2019, following about thirty searches in the Brussels region. Members of the same family from Anderlecht, they are the alleged main perpetrators of a drug trafficking operation from Morocco.
This arrest, which took place as part of an investigation into international drug trafficking, resulted in the indictment of eleven people, the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office said. This vast operation of searches aimed to dismantle the activities of a criminal organization active in international drug trafficking.
According to Denis Goeman, Spokesperson for the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office, quoted by RTL Tvi, this Anderlecht family structure had been importing cannabis from Spain and Morocco to Belgium and France for a few years. Of the 21 people arrested, 12 were referred to an investigating judge. Eleven were indicted, including one as the head of the organization. Four of the indicted are in pre-trial detention. Three others were released on bail and the last four were released without conditions.
Opened several months ago, this investigation made it possible to seize nearly 600 kilos of cannabis in France and the Netherlands, as well as about fifty in Brussels. This intervention on June 27, 2019 mobilized some 200 police officers. About ten kilos of cannabis, 65,000 euros, about ten vehicles and three firearms were also seized, the Spokesperson recalled. For him, this relentless fight against drugs is a priority for the security policy led by the Government.
