Belgian Equality Center Challenges Burkini Ban in Public Pools

In Belgium, UNIA, the interfederal center for equal opportunities, opposes the ban on the burkini in public swimming pools. The body considers it a "form of discrimination".
UNIA is against the ban on the burkini in public swimming pools. In a report on the subject, the body explains that "a general ban" on the burkini ’constitutes a form of discrimination’. It also dismantled the arguments put forward by the swimming pools to ban the burkini (hygiene, male/female equality, neutrality, safety, etc.)
To read:
"On the UNIA side, we are not for or against the full swimsuit. I’m talking about the full swimsuit here, because Muslim women are not the only ones to use it. Some people, for reasons of health or disability, also wear it," explained Patrick Charlier, director of the body, to Sudpresse.
For the Reformist Movement (MR) chaired by Georges-Louis Bouchez, the authorization of the burkini is "totally unacceptable" because "it undermines male-female equality". According to the party, the position of the defenders of the burkini like "Ecolo" is "purely electoral".
