Belgian Army Dismisses Soldier Over Far-Right Extremist Ties

After his suspension "as a precautionary measure" in September 2022, a far-right sympathizing soldier has been dismissed by the Belgian Defense.

The dismissal of this non-commissioned officer in his fifties, with about thirty years in the Belgian army, is justified by his sympathies for the far-right extremist ideology, reports RTBF. "The investigation carried out by the SGRS (General Service for Intelligence and Security) and the examination of the person’s file show that he no longer presents sufficient guarantees in terms of loyalty and integrity," can be read in a ruling by the Council of State.

Drug use, membership and participation in the activities of a hooligan group, acts of violence, and the expression of a far-right extremist ideology are the elements mentioned in the SGRS report.

An investigating judge and the federal prosecutor’s office conducted an investigation on the basis of "terrorist threat" based on the information collected and analyzed by the SGRS about B. R.’s affinities with right-wing extremism. For now, no evidence suggests that the soldier intended to commit terrorist attacks.
