Bank Study Reveals: Low-Income and Older Moroccans Most Likely to Take Loans

Bank Al-Maghrib analyzed the profile of Moroccans who resort the most to consumer and housing loans, based on the criteria of age, income, socio-professional category and place of residence.

According to income, 36% of Moroccans with an income of less than 4,000 dirhams resort to this type of credit, compared to 22% for those with an income between 4,000 and 6,000 dirhams and over 10,000 dirhams and only 20% for those with an income between 6,000 and 10,000 dirhams. By age, Moroccans over 50 are the ones who benefit the most from this bank credit (40%), far ahead of 30-39 year olds (26%), 40-49 year olds (25%) and under 30s (9%).

By place of residence, the urban agglomerations of Casablanca (28%) and Rabat (20%) host the Moroccans fond of consumer credit. According to these data, the typical profile of a Moroccan beneficiary of a consumer loan would be an employee, over 50 years old, residing in Casablanca, with an income of less than 4,000 dirhams.

Regarding housing loans, 43% of private sector employees resort to this type of credit, compared to 37% for civil servants, 12% for liberal professions and 7% for craftsmen-traders. In terms of income, Moroccans with a monthly income of more than 10,000 dirhams come first with 32%, followed by those with an income of less than 4,000 dirhams (29%), with an income between 4,000 and 6,000 dirhams (22%), and with an income between 6,000 and 10,000 dirhams (17%).

By age, those over 40 resort the most to housing loans (63%), followed by 30-40 year olds (30%) and under 30s (7%). By place of residence, the Casablanca-Settat region holds the record (37%), followed by the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region (18%). Based on these data, the typical profile of a Moroccan beneficiary of a housing loan would be an employee, 40-49 years old, residing in Casablanca, and with an income of more than 10,000 dirhams.
