Avignon Neighborhood Rocked by Automatic Gunfire, Linked to Moroccan Crime Networks

The Rocade neighborhood in Avignon was the scene of automatic gunfire on Sunday, March 3. Bursts of fire damaged building facades, vehicles and a tram. This incident is part of a context of repeated violence in Avignon and the Vaucluse, the sponsors of which would be located, among others, in Morocco.
Following this event, the drivers of Avignon’s public transport exercised their right of withdrawal, disrupting the service. This shooting comes shortly after a similar incident that resulted in a death.
A police source tells France 3 that incidents of this type occur about every two weeks, motivated by demonstrations of force, intimidation attempts or diversions. The precise causes vary, ranging from territorial conflicts related to drug trafficking to personal disputes.
Although the motivations differ, the proximity of drug dealing points is a recurring factor. These points generate significant revenues, up to 50,000 euros per day in Avignon, according to the same source. This situation leads to a strong presence of weapons and increased cocaine consumption among the young people involved.
The drug trade is organized in a structured way, with a precise division of roles, comparable to an industrial organization. While the points of sale are generally held by local individuals, the heads of the networks are often located abroad. A police source specifies that these leaders often operate from Spain, Dubai, but also Morocco. This international dimension complicates the work of investigators and underscores the extent of the networks.
The rejuvenation of individuals involved in these activities is a major concern for the authorities. Minors, sometimes as young as 14, are recruited through social networks and are offered high salaries and various benefits.
The money generated by trafficking is reinvested in the legal economy, further complicating the task of investigators. In December 2023, an operation allowed the seizure of nearly one million euros from "collectors" in the Vaucluse.
