Arriving in Ireland under the name « Unknown Unknown », this Moroccan man is now wanted

An arrest warrant has just been issued for this man, who was arrested in early August in Dún Laoghaire, near Dublin, while carrying neither a passport nor any document establishing his identity.

At his first appearance, on August 8, the Irish justice system had even been forced to register the defendant under the particularly unusual name « Unknown Unknown ». The man subsequently claimed his name was Elane Charkaoui, but the Irish police were unable to confirm this identity.

His journey had also intrigued investigators. The Moroccan man claimed to have left Morocco, crossed Spain and then France, and reached the United Kingdom before arriving in Ireland on August 7. He said he had made the final part of his journey by boat from London.

According to The Irish Times, the police had requested that he remain in custody. They stressed that he had neither a fixed address, nor family, nor any known ties in Ireland. Above all, the officers explained that there was then « no way » to verify the name he had just provided.

The police did not want him to be released

Judge Peter White nevertheless considered that these elements were insufficient to deny him release. In particular, the Moroccan man could not be blamed for any previous failure to appear before a court.

Bail was therefore set at 200 euros. In return, the man was required to provide the police with a telephone number and report twice a week to a designated police station.

He was also being prosecuted under Irish immigration legislation for being unable to present a valid passport or identity document. He is also accused of stealing 40 euros’ worth of beer from a Tesco supermarket in Dún Laoghaire.

The situation has now changed. When his case was called again before the Dún Laoghaire court on Tuesday, the defendant was absent. The court also learned that he had failed to comply with the conditions imposed when he was released.

Judge Conor Fottrell then issued an arrest warrant, reports Western People.

The case is all the more unusual because the difficulty of establishing his identity was precisely one of the arguments put forward by the police to request that he remain in custody several weeks earlier. Another Irish case involving a false identity and a Moroccan national had recently demonstrated the importance attached to identity documents by the country’s authorities.
