Anchovies from Morocco Trigger a Food Alert in France

The report was registered on 21 August in the European food alert system RASFF under reference 2026.7439. It concerns “anchovy skewers” from Morocco in which potassium metabisulfite, known under code E224, was detected.

In France, the product had already been subject to a recall a few days earlier. According to the notice published on 13 August on RappelConso, these are one-kilogram trays of “Banderilles Anchois” marketed under the Tapasti brand.

Two batches are affected: batch 86X, whose use-by date is 23 September 2026, and batch 100X, valid until 7 October. The products were marketed between 15 April and 11 August throughout France.

An unauthorized additive in this product

The reason for the recall is the presence of potassium metabisulfite E224, classified in the sulfite family. The additive exists under European food regulations, but its use is not authorized in all product categories. In the case of these anchovy skewers, the French authorities classified the issue under “unauthorized additives and flavorings.”

The recall is voluntary. The authorities are asking people who still have these products not to consume them, to return them to the point of sale or destroy them. A refund is available.

The products were notably distributed by Spécialités du Monde, Chazal Pertuis, SARL 2FB and at the Halles de Rungis. No illness linked to their consumption is mentioned in the official notice.

At the beginning of August, undeclared mustard was notably discovered in pasta originating from Morocco. More recently, green beans from Morocco sold in Germany contained 4.5 times the authorized amount of a pesticide.
