Algerian Student in France Speaks Out Against Rising Racism and Prejudice

Monday 19 August 2019, by Bladi.net

The multiplication of racist prejudices against the Algerian citizen Idir, living in France, is denounced by him during an interview with a French media. Given the seriousness of these behaviors, the Algerian student fears that they may lead to attacks.

The troubles of Idir, 31, a student who came from Algeria seven years ago to complete his studies, have their source in prejudices. Often a victim of certain racist jokes from his colleagues, Idir, married to an American, often no longer knows which way to turn, after each attack committed on French soil, reports Europe1.

Idir has known these prejudices. He recounts having often shown restraint at work, not to get angry. His anger rises, in particular, when his colleagues take him for a thief. Even if Idir acknowledges that they do not do it on purpose, he admits that these are "rotten jokes" that he cannot let pass.

The other prejudice is linked to his relationship with an American. This is frowned upon by his relatives and friends. This uncomfortable situation is poorly experienced by his girlfriend who often gets angry, says the Algerian. For Idir, the friendship has succeeded with his girlfriend because she knew him on "the true image of Algeria". He also recounts that his girlfriend had never known Algeria before deciding to live with him. "She discovered my family, the culture, the beauty of the landscapes, the cuisine, ...." notes Idir, proud to be an Algerian.
