Algerian President Addresses Hirak Protests, Tensions with Morocco in French Interview

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune spoke in the columns of the French newspaper Le Figaro. Several topics were discussed, including relations with France and the negative impact produced by Moroccan lobbies to the detriment of Algeria.

The Algerian head of state spoke about the Hirak, which is celebrating its anniversary on February 22nd. For him, things are starting to calm down and almost all the demands of the Hirak have been met: "There was no fifth term, nor an extension of the fourth term, then the president resigned," he insisted.

In the French newspaper, the Algerian president noted that Algerians have integrated the fact that what was destroyed over a decade cannot be restored in two months. For Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the issue of revising the Constitution is a priority and the final draft will be submitted to the two chambers of Parliament, then to a popular referendum by the beginning of the summer.

For the president, "the army is carrying out its constitutional missions; it is not involved in politics, investment or the economy. It is there to safeguard national unity, protect the Constitution and the Algerians." Also, the hunt for the former barons does not mean the end of the "political-financial mafia". As for the fight against corruption, it continues, he assures.

However, for the Algerian president, there is another lobby, the Moroccan one, whose entire policy is based on the containment of Algeria, and which is present in France. It is a lobby, with economic and social connections, which is afraid of Algeria and tries to interfere under the pretext that it is also concerned," he explained to the newspaper.
