Algeria recalls its consul from Oujda and sends him to London without announcing a replacement
Algeria has ended the tenure of its consul in Oujda, Hicham Ferhati, who has now been sent to London. No successor in Morocco appears in the new series of appointments decided by Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The departure is part of a major diplomatic reshuffle detailed this Friday, September 11, by TSA Algérie. Several Algerian ambassadors and consuls are leaving their posts or receiving new assignments.

Hicham Ferhati had been appointed Algeria’s consul in Oujda in March 2024, when diplomatic relations between Algiers and Rabat had already been severed for nearly three years. Tebboune has now ended his tenure in Morocco, but the diplomat has not been dismissed: he is becoming consul general in London.
Oujda consulate is not announced as closed
The list of new appointments mentions no successor in Oujda. It does, however, include three new consuls general: Brahim Chennouf in Lyon, M’Hammed Sahnoune in Brussels and Hicham Ferhati in London.
This departure does not mean that Algeria is closing its consulate in Oujda. No cited text announces the closure of the consular representation, which may continue to operate pending the appointment of a new official. The consul general in Casablanca, Belghith Djoudi, appointed at the same time as Ferhati in 2024, also does not appear among the officials concerned.

Despite the rupture unilaterally decided by Algiers in August 2021 and the departure of the ambassadors, Morocco and Algeria had maintained their consulates to handle the administrative procedures of their nationals. The withdrawal of the consul from Oujda now leaves the post without a newly announced officeholder, in a context in which no political rapprochement is emerging between the two neighbors.
