Algeria Fumes as Moroccan Diplomat Backs Kabyle Self-Determination

The support of Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations, for the "valiant Kabyle people" who "deserve to enjoy their right to self-determination" has provoked the anger of the Algerian diplomat and former Minister of Communication, Abdelaziz Rahabi. He calls for firmness against the kingdom.

"Morocco’s call for sedition in Algeria is not a simple diplomatic act but a hostile action against its unity and a programmed escalation in the strategy of permanent tension in the region," reacted the Algerian diplomat in a post on social media, on Saturday. "Algeria, people and state, must react with force and firmness," said Abdelaziz Rahabi.

Ramtane Lamamra who "stands as a fervent defender of the right to self-determination, refuses this same right to the Kabyle people, one of the oldest peoples of Africa, who suffer the longest foreign occupation," commented Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations in response to the allegations of the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, on the Moroccan Sahara issue during the general debate of the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held by videoconference on July 13 and 14.

On Friday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced "a particularly dangerous drift". According to it, Algeria is "entitled to expect a clarification of the definitive position of the Kingdom of Morocco on this incident of extreme gravity".
