Air Algérie directly takes on Royal Air Maroc on its African turf
Air Algérie is stepping up its offensive in sub-Saharan Africa. The Algerian airline is opening three new destinations in the autumn: Brazzaville, Conakry and Lagos, all markets where Royal Air Maroc has already established its network from Casablanca.
According to AeroRoutes, bookings have opened for flights scheduled to begin on October 25, 2026. Conakry will be served three times a week by Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
Brazzaville will also receive three weekly rotations starting October 26, using the same type of aircraft. Air Algérie will simultaneously add Lagos to its network, with flights combined with Abuja.

These openings place the Algerian airline on destinations already well known to Royal Air Maroc. From Casablanca, RAM has built a significant part of its African strategy around connections between Europe, Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa, particularly to Guinea, Congo and Nigeria.
Air Algérie attacks the heart of RAM’s African network
The choice of Conakry, Brazzaville and Lagos is therefore not insignificant. Air Algérie is no longer content to develop routes to markets where competition is limited: it is now coming to seek passengers on routes where the Moroccan airline already has a long-established presence.
This offensive comes as the latest figures comparing Royal Air Maroc and Air Algérie show two African strategies that remain very different. RAM generates notably more passenger-kilometers and relies more heavily on its international network and Casablanca hub.
For Air Algérie, the challenge is now to turn Algiers into a genuine connecting hub for sub-Saharan Africa. The new routes scheduled from October show that the airline wants to gradually reduce Royal Air Maroc’s lead in this area.
