Spain Reaffirms Support for UN-Led Dialogue on Western Sahara Status

Thursday 17 June 2021, by Prince

During his two-day visit to Berlin, Muñiz told the press that Spain’s position on the Sahara is "known and constant." "From the beginning, we have supported the resolution proposed by the United Nations Security Council, namely the establishment of a dialogue between the Sahrawi and Moroccan parties on the status of the region and the mediation of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO)," he assured.

The Secretary of State also calls for the appointment of a new UN special envoy for Western Sahara, a position that has remained vacant since the resignation of Horst Köhler in May 2019 for health reasons. Germany, also at odds with Morocco on the Sahara issue, "shares Spain’s position," Muñiz added.

During this visit, the Spanish Secretary of State met with his German counterpart, Antje Leendertse. The two personalities exchanged views on common interests to the two countries (democracy, human rights and women’s rights, multilateralism, European integration) and on international strategies. He also met with a group of Spanish professionals residing in the German capital as well as representatives of German think tanks.
